  • Itinerary: Hue – DMZ Tours office in Dong Ha (113 Le Loi Street) – Full DMZ – A Luoi Town: Hamburger Hill – A Shau Valley – A Shau Airfield – Hue
  • Starts and ends: Hue (at your hotel)

Day 1: Hue – Full DMZ – A Luoi (overnight in A Luoi)

6h30: Early departure for the DMZ Tours meeting point in Dong Ha, 113 Le Loi Street, for a briefing and a look at the map. Dong Ha was the headquarters of the US 3rd Marine Division. Visit Doc Mieu Base (A2), part of the McNamara Line. Continue to the Old DMZ, where we walk across the Freedom Bridge over the Ben Hai River, the border between North and South Vietnam. Then on to the Vinh Moc Tunnels, the refuge of more than 300 North Vietnamese people for six years (1966 to 1972). Back to Dong Ha for lunch.

In the afternoon, we drive to the Rockpile, a US Marine lookout, and on to Khe Sanh Combat Base, site of the most famous siege of the Vietnam War. Westmoreland, determined to avoid another Dien Bien Phu, assembled an armada of 5,000 airplanes and helicopters and increased the number of troops at Khe Sanh to 6,000. After Khe Sanh, we drive along the Ho Chi Minh Road (Route 14) to Hamburger Hill. Overnight in A Luoi Town.

Day 2: A Luoi – Hamburger Hill (Ap Bia Hill) – A Shau Valley – NVA tunnels – A Shau Airfield – Hue

6h30: Breakfast. We continue to Hamburger Hill (Ap Bia Hill, or Hill 937). In May 1969, American forces on a search-and-destroy operation near the Lao border fought one of the fiercest engagements of the war here, suffering terrible casualties. The battle between the US Army's 101st Airborne and NVA troops lasted ten days, from May 10 to May 20, 1969. Down the hill, we visit the NVA's Nam Son Tunnels. Lunch at a local restaurant in A Luoi. After lunch, we drive to A Shau Airfield in the wide A Shau Valley, the area worst affected by Agent Orange. You can see many bomb craters on the airstrip, and special trees planted to reduce the dioxin in the soil. The abandoned area became an important transshipment center for supplies coming down the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Drive back to your hotel in Hue.
