The infamous My Lai Massacre site is about 14 km from Quang Ngai and 124 km south of Hoi An. The search-and-destroy operation, carried out by Task Force Barker – three companies of US Army infantry – began on the morning of 16 March 1968.
As the soldiers of Lieutenant William Calley's 1st Platoon – one of the three platoons of Charlie Company, commanded by Captain Ernest Medina – moved through Xom Lang, they shot and bayoneted fleeing villagers, threw hand grenades into houses and family bomb shelters, slaughtered livestock and burned homes. Over the next few hours, the 2nd Platoon, the 3rd Platoon and the company headquarters group committed terrible crimes. More than 300 villagers were killed in the operation. There was no resistance during the assault.
We walk around the village and visit the memorial and the museum of the massacre. Drive back to Hoi An.
