8h00: Leave Hoi An for My Son Sanctuary.

My Son is a cluster of abandoned and partly ruined Shaiva Hindu temples in central Vietnam, built between the 4th and the 14th century by the kings of Champa, an Indianized kingdom of the Cham people. The temples are dedicated to the worship of God according to Shaivism, in which God is named Shiva, "the Auspicious One". In this complex he is worshipped under various local names, the most important of which is Bhadreshvara.

From the 4th to the 14th century AD, the valley of My Son was a site of religious ceremony for the kings of the ruling dynasties of Champa, as well as a burial place for Cham royalty and national heroes. It was closely associated with the nearby Cham cities of Indrapura (Dong Duong) and Simhapura (Tra Kieu). At one time, the site had over 70 temples as well as numerous stelae bearing historically important inscriptions in Sanskrit and Cham.

My Son is perhaps the longest-inhabited archaeological site in Mainland Southeast Asia, but most of its architecture was destroyed by US bombing during a single week of the Vietnam War. In 1999, UNESCO recognized My Son as a World Heritage Site.

Back in Hoi An at about 15h30 the same day.
