7h30: Leave Dong Ha, headquarters of the US 3rd Marine Division during the war, for Con Thien Firebase. In 1967, the NVA crossed the DMZ and laid siege to Con Thien Firebase. The American side dropped 40,000 tons of bombs and ammunition to lift the siege. For the NVA, though, it was a diversion to prepare for the Tet Offensive. Continue to Camp Carroll, where the US side had big 175 mm howitzers, called the "kings of the battlefield". Continue to Dakrong Bridge and the Ho Chi Minh Trail, then drive to Khe Sanh Combat Base, a large American base in the mountains. Continue to Lang Vei Special Forces Camp, where on 7 February 1968 the NVA attacked with 11 Russian tanks – the first time they used tanks in South Vietnam. Drive back to Dong Ha.
